College Ready

When students graduate college ready, they leave high school with the knowledge, skills and behavior necessary to complete basic freshman level college coursework. Let’s break down these three basics of college readiness.

Knowledge
In Louisiana, college bound students should work towards achieving a TOPS University Diploma. This diploma includes the common core requirements for college entrance. Student knowledge in these courses is assessed through GPA and assessments (ACT/SAT).

Skills
College ready skills include things like critical thinking, time management, communication and decision making. These skills can be exemplified through a student’s ability to write a well-structured essay, complete mathematical formulas, use the scientific method and work through real-world problems.

Behavior
The transition from high school to college can be challenging for some students, which is why it’s critical that we support our students in building healthy behaviors to help them succeed in life. These behaviors can include resilience, positivity, interpersonal relationships and habits to remain healthy and thrive socially, emotionally and academically.

Jefferson Parish Schools offers varying degrees of advanced coursework including AP Classes and CLEP, to expose students to the rigors of college courses. In addition to boosting a student’s application to college, these courses can help teach essential skills, such as perseverance, time management and effective study strategies, that will help students succeed in a college setting.
