Summer Bridge FAQ
-
What does it mean if my child received the following message on their report card? (Due to Bulletin 1566, your student will be retained and must attend Summer Literacy Camp.)
If your child was in the 3rd or 4th grade and reading below grade level, as indicated on the DIBELS end of year screener, they received the notification above on their report card. This means that your child must receive 30 hours of targeted literacy interventions in order to ensure your child has the greatest opportunity to read on level for the 2024-25 school year. The following timeline outlines the support that will be provided before the 2024-25 school year begins in August.
Timeline of Support:
April- May: End of the year DIBELS screening and notification of DIBELS results
June 3rd-June 28th: Summer Bridge Literacy Camp(free for JP students) Steve Carter Tutoring(additional fees will apply)
July/August: A school-level ABIT(Academic Behavior Intervention Team) meeting led by school leaders to determine promotion based on participation in summer interventions, Steve Carter tutoring, and various school performance data. -
How can I see my students progress on Dibels?
A copy of the DIBELS report was sent home to parents after each testing period. When students were screened in Fall, Winter, and Spring, student data was sent home with each student. If a parent does not have a copy of their student’s DIBELS snapshot, schools can provide additional copies. Please contact your child’s school for an additional copy.
-
When did schools announce Diebels testing to parents?
Our system has been using the Acadience screener for the last 3 years in grades K-4. This year 2023-2024, the state mandated the use of a similar screener, DIBELS. This decision made by the state coincides with their policy: Bulletin 741- Each LEA shall require that every child enrolled in kindergarten-third grade be given the BESE-approved literacy screener three times per school year: within the first 30 days of the school year, in December, and in April. The results of this screener shall be used to plan instruction and provide appropriate and timely intervention. Schools shared DIBELS results with parents of children in grades K-4 after screening took place.
-
My school didn't provide a literacy plan for my child. What happens now?
All schools provided literacy plans based on students’ DIBELS results. All plans are individualized based on the students’ data. If you are not familiar with your child’s literacy plan, please contact your school.
-
My child passed ELA. Why does he/she need to attend Summer Bridge after not meeting Dibels score requirements?
While your child may have successfully completed and passed curriculum-based assessments administered by their teacher throughout the 2023-24 academic year, they did not meet the End-of-Year state score requirements on the DIBELS reading screener. While a student may perform well on graded assessments that reflect daily classroom learning and progress, they may still struggle with the specific skills targeted by a screener, highlighting a gap that might not be as apparent in broader evaluations.
-
When will I receive notice if my child is accepted into summer bridge?
Acceptance notification was sent to parent emails and JCalls last week. If students enrolled Friday, May 24, 2024 or later, they will receive notification May 28, 2024. Site Coordinators can verify student enrollment. Parents can also email summerbridge@jpschools.org to verify enrollment.
-
What are the school hub sites?
Summer Bridge has sites on both the East Bank and West Bank.
- The hub sites for the West Bank schools are Ellender, Isaac Joseph, Terrytown, Solis, and Patrick Taylor.
- The East Bank hub sites are Keller, Riviere, Bunche, Greenlawn, and Moscona.
The chart below shows the hub site location and the schools that are affiliated with each site along with the site coordinators’ contact information.
-
When will I receive information about transportation routes?
Transportation routes have been set up and picked by the drivers. Drivers will begin calling parents on May 29, 2024. The site coordinators will have the lists of all students that belong to each route for each school. The parents will have access to all of the drivers phone numbers if, for any reason, they have not been contacted by the driver prior to Summer Bridge beginning. All walk-in registrations will be processed once the registration window is closed on Friday, June 7, 2024. Those registrants will receive their bus assignments no later than Tuesday, June 11, 2024.

Who should I contact if my child takes medication, has a special procedure, and/or health concerns?
Please contact the JP Schools Health Services Department at 504-736-7386.
-
I missed the registration deadline but it is recommended that my child attends Summer Bridge, what are my options?
If it was recommended that your child attend Summer Bridge after the registration deadline, you have the option to register your child in person at their assigned hub site from June 3 to June 7. This option is only for students who meet eligibility requirements.
-
I have vacation previously scheduled. How many days of Summerbridge can I actually miss? How can they make up the difference?
If you are enrolled in Summer Bridge and have to miss more than 2 days, parents can enroll their child in Steve Carter Tutoring to support literacy interventions consisting of explicit, targeted literacy instruction based on the science of reading. Bulletin 1566 requires that third and fourth grade students who score below grade level on an end-of-year literacy assessment must receive 30 hours of summer literacy interventions.
