Based on family interest and participation, schools will offer after school care. 

Because of new school start times and in order to support our employees, the 2020-2021 Voluntary Transfer Process has been extended. The 2020-2021 Voluntary Transfer Process, which ended on May 15, will be extended to June 8. During the extension, any employee who desires to transfer must apply online between May 27 - June 5. The application window will close on June 5. All transfer mutual consents must be received in Human Resources by June 8. For more information, please see this page: https://www.jpschools.org/VTP

We transport 40,000 plus students twice a day over a large geographical area. Therefore, our schools share buses using a tiered transportation model. Starting all schools at the same time would require adding many additional buses, which would not be possible given budget constraints. This is especially important now that COVID-19 has stalled our economy and created significant revenue declines.  

School time changes were included as part of the 2020 Infrastructure and Efficiency Plan that Dr. Brumley presented to the Jefferson Parish School Board during the February 2020 meeting. This plan was unanimously approved during the Board’s March 2020 public hearing and special session meeting.

School time changes were made to benefit kids and families. Research shows that high school students perform better when schools start later (American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). We’ve also heard from many working families with elementary age children that starting schools earlier would make it easier for them to get their kids to school before going to work. This has been a common issue we’ve heard from families over the past two years at our coffee chats, town halls, community events, and parent councils. 

In addition to the benefit to kids and families, the school time changes were included in the 2020 Infrastructure and Efficiency plan to help us close a $16 million budget gap. The new school times will allow for more efficient use of our buses and routes. Due to the change we will save an estimated $475,000. Due to these type of efficiencies, we were able to balance our budget while maintaining educator jobs. This is especially important now that COVID-19 has stalled our economy and created significant revenue declines.

Yes. Our schools will simply adjust the times those activities and events are offered. Schools will share more information with families over the summer.
